We hold our Club Meeting Dinner on every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, at the Peony Retaurant (DB Resident Club)
Guests and Visiting Rotarians are always most welcome at our meetings !
***
Join us at our Monthly Dinner at Peony restaurant (DBRC) on November 5th, at 7:45pm,
with special guest speaker Nicole Sicard!
For the past few years, the members of the Rotary Club of Discovery Bay have been committed to support Nicole Sicard and her NGO Mayaa charity. After being nominated at Rotary International's "The One" Humanitarian awards, she could raise enough funds to build a brand new center in Nepal, to help provide quality education to the children in need. On April 15th 2019, Mayaa Center held its Opening Ceremony in Kathmandu, together with members from the Rotary Club of Discovery Bay, the French Consul General in Nepal and Mayaa team and students. THIS IS THE STORY that she wants to share with us during this meaningful evening on Nov 5th. We hope you can join us!
*** About Nicole Sicard: Native of France, Nicole Sicard arrived in Hong Kong in 1964, at age 29. She taught biology in various schools in Hong Kong until her retirement in 1998. During her years of teaching, she created "free evening classes to provide education to migrant workers with the help of some of her students. She also set up some community projects to help children with disabilities, especially the visually impaired. In 1996, Nicole Sicard received the "Best Teacher of the Year" award. To this day, she remains the only non-Chinese teacher to have received this award in Hong Kong. In addition to teaching, she has traveled a lot throughout Asia. She went to Laos, for example, to help refugees fleeing the bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. She also tutored children from the Tibetan Children’s Villages in Dharamsala, India. She also traveled to the Philippines (Palawan 1978-1984) and Mongolia (2001 to 2010) where she got involved in charity work. Since her retirement in 1998, she also got involved with the Nepalese association Concern, which aims to provide education to street children. In 2011, she created with her friend Sarbendra Pachhai, Mayaa Nepal, which took over the activities of Concern. In 2016, she founded Mayaa Hong Kong, not only to raise funds for Mayaa Nepal, but also to help the underprivileged children of Hong Kong. Soon after it’s creation Mayaa Hong Kong was given the status of an NGO with Chapter 88 tax exemption advantages. Mayaa France followed in 2018 also with the aim of raising funds. Thus, Mayaa became Mayaa World to reflect the global reach. They firmly believe that by giving a good education to all children, the future generations will bring prosperity to themselves and to the country
*** All guests and visiting Rotarians are most welcome to join us, so please refer to our calendar for up to date meeting details. About our Monthly Dinners: "Friendship constitutes an enrichment of life" - Paul Harris.

Our health is everything. Yet 400 million people in the world can’t afford or don’t have access to basic health care. We believe good health care is everyone’s right.Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That’s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. We lead efforts both large and small. We set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together. Our members combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio. Prevention is important, which is why we also focus on health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care. How Rotary makes help happenDisease does not prevent itself. We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases. Rotary members have hundreds of health projects underway around the world at any given time. How Rotary makes help happenThrough our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger. We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented. How Rotary makes help happenRotary provides education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
